WHAT IS A COOPERATIVE YOUTH MINISTRY?
In August of 2015, multiple churches in and around Midway gathered to talk about how they might work together to better minister to the youth of our community. Over a period of 9 months, the mission and vision of this potential ministry was shaped and refined. Locally Grown is the culmination of this process!
The goal of this ministry is to work cooperatively with local churches. By partnering with church leaders and Christian mentors from multiple congregations in Midway and surrounding areas, this program will create opportunities that:
1. Supplement existing youth ministries
2. Support churches without youth programming
3. Engage youth that do not attend church
OUR VALUES & VISION
God-First: We will keep spiritual development at the heart of everything we do. We want every young person who becomes a part of this community to gain a deeper knowledge of God’s love for them, and to be provided with the support and resources they need to live as disciples of Jesus Christ.
Relational: We believe that God created us to live in community. We will seek to create a safe environment where young people can form healthy relationships with their peers and with caring adults. We will also place emphasis on learning from, and caring for our family, friends and neighbors outside of this group.
Inclusive: We are a community of young people and adults where there are no barriers to participation.
Interactive: We believe that any form of growth starts with active participation. We will strive to create exciting learning opportunities that engage and challenge everyone involved.
Relevant: We will do everything in our power to get to know each young person who attends this ministry, and approach real life ideas, issues, and activities in a way that feels practical and meaningful to them.
OUR COMMITMENT TO SAFETY
Our ultimate goal is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for teenagers to grow in their faith and develop healthy relationships with peers and adults.
Jesus taught that “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me,” (Mark 9:37 NRSV) and “If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones…it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea.” (Matthew 18:6 NRSV).
The program leaders for Locally Grown have undergone background screenings, and all adult volunteers who have regular and direct contact with youth will be required to participate in training and background screenings.
